What a Canadian winter demands of a sauna

A sauna that works in a mild backyard can fail in a Canadian winter if it was never designed for one. Cold country asks for three things at once: an envelope that reaches and holds temperature efficiently, a foundation that stays put through frost, and a roof that copes with snow. The profiles in this group are drawn with all three in mind, which is why they carry cold, extreme-cold or high-snow-load tags rather than just “outdoor”.

The envelope is the heart of it. A cold-climate insulated assembly — full cavity insulation, a continuous sealed vapour barrier and a ventilated rainscreen — is what lets a modest heater warm the room quickly and hold it against the cold, keeping running costs sane through a long winter.

Foundation, roof and heat in the cold

Below the sauna, the floor is kept clear of the ground on ground screws, piers or a frost-protected slab, so snowmelt and frost heave cannot reach it. Above, a snow-shedding gable or a properly engineered warm flat roof carries the load. And because deep cold and wind lengthen warm-up, a sensibly sized heater and, for electric profiles, a timer to pre-heat, make winter use practical rather than a chore.

Glazing is the variable to watch. A big glass wall is beautiful but loses far more heat than an insulated one, so the most efficient Canadian-winter profiles glaze sparingly. If you want outlook as well, expect a larger heater and a longer warm-up — a trade-off the archive states plainly on every glazed profile.
