The foundation decides whether a cold-climate sauna stays level, dry and frost-stable for decades. This guide compares the seven base types in the archive and matches them to structure weight, soil and site.

The base is where cold-climate saunas quietly succeed or fail. A good foundation keeps the sauna level, dry and frost-stable for decades; a poor one lets it heave, settle and rot. The archive catalogues seven base types — here is how to choose between them.

The two questions that decide it

Every foundation choice comes down to:

  1. How heavy is the structure? A barrel or pod is light; a log sauna or a glazed, multi-zone building is heavy.
  2. What is the ground and the frost like? Stable, free-draining soil is forgiving; soft clay, organic ground and deep frost are not.

The seven types

  • Gravel pad — a compacted, free-draining bed. Simple and economical for lighter structures on decent ground. Its drainage is its strength.
  • Ground screws — steel piles driven below the frost line. The archive’s default for framed cabins, cubes, pods and sheds: fast, low-disturbance, and they lift the floor clear of snow.
  • Concrete piers — poured footings below the frost line for heavier cabins and log saunas that need permanent point support.
  • Concrete slab — a continuous reinforced base and finished floor for the largest, glazed and multi-zone builds; must be frost-protected and insulated below in a cold climate.
  • Skid foundation — heavy runners on a gravel bed; needs no excavation and lets a light sauna be relocated, but rides on the surface.
  • Deck foundation — carrying a compact sauna on a strong existing deck; hinges on verifying the deck’s load and routing drainage clear of it.
  • Trailer foundation — a road chassis that makes the sauna fully mobile, with weight and height governed by road limits.

Frost heave, in one paragraph

Water expands when it freezes. If it pools under your sauna and freezes, it lifts the structure — unevenly — and drops it again in spring. The two defences are to bear below the frost line (screws, piers, frost-protected slabs) and to keep water from collecting there in the first place with free-draining fill and good grading. Surface foundations (gravel, skids) manage heave by draining well and moving as a unit rather than resisting it.

Drainage and the floor

Whatever the base, the sauna floor is sealed and drained so rinse water leaves quickly and the room dries between sessions. A lifted foundation leaves air beneath the floor, which helps it stay dry — one more reason screws and piers suit snow country.
